Having people over causes me to break out the fuzzy pole duster to clean the cove molding! Does the deluxe Paa’s dye kit have the copper wire egg dipper, or has it gone plastic?
Haha Jerry, I got out the feather duster! I did not get around to most of the molding so that is in my future. About the egg dyeing question, I love that you asked that. Only you would ask that. I will have to check. My friends actually did most of the egg coloring while I was making the marinade for the lamb. So much to do, so little time!
Amy, so nice of you to say you like my singing -- as I've written, I aspire to be a soprano! I will have to get a look at Immaculate Conception in Wellsville! St. Louis never ceases to amaze me .. it's so grand. Bigger than the Cathedral!
Jim, thank you!! Coming from a fellow writer, your nice words make my day. And about the headlines, your Substack title, "Pieces of Jim," cracks me up. I have been on Substack a year and still have "Mary's Substack." No excuse!
Thanks, Mary! I’m really glad to hear you like the name “Pieces of Jim.” I was actually thinking I should have named it “Jim Nolan’s Substack” so maybe “Mary’s Substack” is just fine!
I love the column you wrote on the Ugly Lawn Contest. My question: Who was the Buffalonian who had his turf shipped across the ocean? That was one of the most amazing Buffalo stories I have ever heard!
The book and photos are excellent but unfortunately I do not have my copy anymore. Perhaps the author can be contacted? It looks like you can order a used copy for $10 or perhaps the library has it? I just hope I'm right that that's where the story came from.
Jim, thanks for the info! I ordered the book. It looks as if it belongs in my library with or without this particular story. Thank you for being in touch -- I look forward to keeping up with your writing!
You will love the book, I suspect—really demonstrates how amazing a city Buffalo was (and is). And the photography is fantastic. I am so happy you like my writing!
Wait a minute, AI does diets? You will have to write about that!

The inside of the church is reminiscent of my childhood church, Immaculate Conception, in Wellsville. What a lovely soprano voice you have!

Wonderful essay (and terrific title, too!).

I'm glad you liked it, Mary. I believe the story came from this book from 1999:

Thanks, Mary. It's a pretty incredible book. Really demonstrates how special Buffalo is. Let me know if the lawn story is in there!
