Sattler's? Sattler's? My Mary, you are indeed too young to even press those words into print. We were indeed babes in strollers, the wooden kind, when my mom and babcia wheeled us into 998 Broadway to fit for Sunday bonnets and such. The basement, filled with smelly delicatessen wonderments. The biggest thrill, for my sister Claudia and me, was the heated peanut machines. A penny for a handful located at the elevator doors. Or, perhaps I am dreaming it all. Your writing is spectacular. As always.
Janice, your words really bring the old Sattler's to life! I can just feel it! "The basement, filled with smelly delicatessen wonderments." I do have memories of the old 5 and 10s, like Woolworths, where canaries were seen as necessities -- you'd hear them chirping as you headed into the basement. Stores like that should come back!! Thank you for this amazing Sattler's description... it makes my day!
Frank, I never thought of that, about the Canadian politeness drifting over here. That could be true! In any case, you're right ... the politeness is very Buffalo. We are always holding doors and picking up things people drop and excusing overselves. Thank you for your observations!
Thank you for mentioning the Blue Light Special!! I miss Kmart so much. Our neighborhood Kmart just closed a few years ago. I did artwork of it for my friend Ryan, the world's biggest Kmart fan.
Amy, thanks for this Ollie's insight! The only Ollie's I know is the one in Cheektowaga. It is fun, always, to prowl through it. Just this morning I was re-reading an art book I got there, on Japanese brush pen drawing. $3.99 -- it goes for a lot more on Amazon, and gets great reviews.
Jim, you always make me laugh. "We're going back in" in January ... I am already looking forward to returning to Ollie's when the Christmas gift rush is over!

“Wonderments” is a wonderful word.
“One thing you always notice at Ollie’s is how polite people are”

It’s a Buffalo thing, we are not a small big city, we are a big small town. And maybe some of that Canadian politeness drifts over into our air.

Visions of the "Blue Light Special" ring in my head.

The Ollie's in Cheektowaga is so much nicer and bigger than the one in Niagara Falls
