Tariffs Take a Bite Out Of Aldi
Bad time to fall for those fine German pickles, mein Freund
Tariffs are hitting Aldi! I was there this morning and I could not help noticing.
That Borgonzola cheese I love was up to $4.49. I am pretty sure that Borgonzola — and its buttery cousins, Brie and Camembert — were $3-something very recently. I was buying them freely — lavishly even — and I know my spending habits. If they had been near $5, I would have thought twice.
Braunschweiger’s up too — $2.99 for one of those yummy one-pound chubs. Still a deal, worth every penny. But I remember when that dreamy liver sausage was under $2, and not long ago, either.
Those German Moser-Roth chocolate bars Howard loves have been creeping up from $1 to $2 and on up. Now they are up to $2.69. Fie! Verdammt!
What timing. Just as I was falling for these German pickles. I bought a jar a few weeks ago in the Special Finds aisle and oh, they are good. Just sweet enough, with virtually no carbs.
The good news is, eggs at Aldi were down to $3.47. Still a far cry from the 99 cents a dozen of yesteryear, but I think they will come down further.
Also, the reliable Happy Farms block cheese, apparently made in USA, is still $2.07. That price went up recently but it was not a big leap, not like the Borgonzola.
And a markdown score: a couple of one-pound packages of Beer Bratwurst with a 42-off sticker. Normally $4 a pound, and I pay it. However with $2 off, they hit it out of the park.
But still … those European delicacies. Ach du lieber Himmel. They are becoming dear, to use an archaic term I love.
I know, the economy needs correcting. Time to tighten the belt.
Which, with that Borgonzola nearing $5, I guess I’ll be doing literally.

A Deep Dive into Aldi's History
Things got away from me this week! I mean I had a lot of things to do and take care of. I missed a lunch I was supposed to go on with a group of my friends. I missed my longed-for meeting with the Keeper of the Giant Anteater.
